H2: Collagen: What Is It?
Perhaps you are wondering what collagen is, what are the benefits, and should you take it? Collagen is everywhere these days and can be found in a variety of products and stores, but is it worth the hype?
Collagen is the building block for bones, muscle, tendons, skin, and ligaments and is the most abundant protein in the body. There are many types of collagen and Types I, II, III, and IV are the most common. The majority found in your body is Type I and is important for providing structure to bones, teeth, skin, connective tissue, and tendons. Type II is useful for joints, Type III for organs and arteries while Type IV is beneficial for the skin.
As you age, your ability to produce collagen diminishes, so taking collagen via a supplement or powder form can certainly be helpful. Collagen can also be affected by a diet high in sugar and processed carbohydrates, along with smoking. However, a healthy diet high in fruits and vegetables, and adequate protein will provide necessary nutrients for the building blocks of collagen production. Strawberries, bell peppers, and citrus fruits are high in vitamin C supporting collagen synthesis. The amino acids, proline, glycine and hydroxyproline are the main protein components of collagen supporting your skin and connective tissue, and it’s important that the collagen powder you choose has these vital amino acids. Seafood, meat, poultry, tofu, and dairy products provide rich sources of protein and help support collagen production.
With so many options available, you can find the right product that works well for you. Collagen is offered in supplement form and a variety of powders, either unsweetened or flavored. There’s even a collagen shake out there!
