Feeling Super Fine in Nine Days Time

Your health is your wealth and spending time honing in on healthy habits is a fabulous form of work! Here are nine tips to work on that will improve your wellness, happiness, and attitude and boost your immunity, increase your hydration, promote renewal and introduce you to pampering practices that your body desires! Take these tips one at a time and put them into practice incrementally.  Challenge yourself every day with the introduction of a new, healthy and happiness boosting behavior.  Remember, if you chose to stick with these nine tips, you truly will be feeling fine!

  1. Hug as often as possible.  People, dogs, trees…Just do it!!!
  2. Drink water constantly!  May your glass always be half full (and then empty) (repeat) (All Day Long!)
  3. Eat right all the time. Cheat days are for cheaters…rise above!
  4. Smile all the time….yes you can! I see you!  You look Awesome! It is contagious!
  5. Laugh as much as possible, most things are funnier than you allow them to be! Laugh! You can do it! The more you do it, the easier it gets!
  6. Take a bath when you feel anxious, confused, overwhelmed or whenever downtime presents. Lather up in a sensuous bath of fizzy, salty delights…add a candle, a great book and some relaxing music….oh yes, you can sip some bubbly too!
  7. Sleep More.  Yep, sleep as much as you can.  It is highly likely that you have a serious sleep deficit going on. Grab a nap, cuddle-up or hunker down.  Dim the lights my friend and take a rest!
  8. Try to get a massage once a week or twice a month.  You deserve this.  Yes, there is a cost involved, but the benefits truly win and outweigh the price.  Look to see if your insurance covers a portion of the cost and check your mailbox and inbox for special offers at your local massage center.
  9. Try acupuncture.  Just like massage, this health benefiting treat is such an amazing way to realign the body, mind, and soul.  Acupuncture promotes a certain inner calm and balance that is nurturing, relaxing and oh so needed.  After you try it once, your body will beg for more (in a good way of course!)!

“No One Ever Went Broke Giving Away Kindness”   ……..  Pass it on!

Practicing Primal? Ensure Your Supplements are as Clean as Your Paleo Diet

You practice Paleo and you are a primal practitioner in all you do.  Your food is clean, your workouts are functional and you live a balanced happy life.  You read labels, scrutinize ingredients and take your time preparing foods that are suited to your healthy lifestyle – foods that are free of gluten, dairy, and sugar.  But, hold on, have you ensured your supplements are suited to your specialized diet too?  Now is time to take a deeper look.

All marketed vitamin, mineral and herbal supplements should be clearly labeled with the exact contained ingredients.  The listed ingredients should include the individual vitamin, mineral and herb as well as the excipients, which are the added secondary ingredients.  All supplement ingredient labels should clearly state whether or not the ingredients are gluten and dairy free along with a host of other common allergens.  More times than not, supplement labels do not correctly identify allergens contained and are often confusing, misleading and inaccurate.  There are, unfortunately, no FDA regulations or laws governing the labeling of supplements and that is why it is so important to find the most trusted, highest quality and scientifically tested and approved supplements.

What to do? Ensuring that your supplements are as clean as your diet is easier than you think.  All you have to do is research who provides pharmaceutical grade, pure, third party tested, science based and allergen free supplements.  This sounds like an involved task, but actually it is not.  My recommendation is that you simply talk with your Paleo friends, review respected primal websites, read reviews and empower yourself with a critical eye for catching dirty supplement labels.  Read thoroughly, do not settle, and only purchase supplements that are guaranteed to be free of gluten, dairy and all of the other ingredients your body is much better without.

Just like everything else you do, take your time to find clean supplements.  Vitamin Packs is a new on-line source carrying only the absolute highest quality supplements from the top US based manufacturers.  All of the Vitamin Pack Supplements go beyond rigorous testing and are labeled with as much detail as possible.  The Vitamin Pack supplement labels clearly list any allergens and are identified as gluten free, wheat free, dairy free, lactose free and also state whether or not they are suitable for vegans or vegetarians.  Their labels are exactly what a supplement label should be. Truthful. Clear. Comprehensive. Staying clean and purely Paleo in all you do just got a bit easier.

Get Green, Save Money & Improve Your Health

If you are like me, you are at your wits end with the endless amounts of garbage you generate and fed up with paying for it.  For many years we have watched our environment decline and our waste products increase, all the while knowing there is something desperately out of balance. We can do something and what we can do is not radical, difficult or time intensive. What we can do is actually easy, saves us time, money and the earth resources. Maybe you have heard these tips before, but I am going to throw them at you and let you make up your mind if you are going to make a change, end your frustration, save money and take charge this time around.

  1. Buy a reusable coffee thermos and keep it with you always… Stop paying full price for coffee and stop using all of those paper cups! If you have a thermos on hand, your coffee will cost less and you will generate zero garbage.
  2. Buy a reusable water bottle.  Again, this generates zero garbage and saves you money. If you think this is untrue, start tracking your bottled water expenses….you will see this is a must-do.
  3. Buy glass containers for food storage.  They do not degrade, they do not leech chemicals into your food and they last.  Plastic containers do none of the above!
  4. Take Vitamins, eat clean. This additional health insurance saves you and the planet more resources than you can imagine!  Invest here, the payoff is amazing later.
  5. Re-use your plastic grocery bags. Put them in your trunk, double them up and use them until they are shredded!  Don’t buy plastic bags….re-use what you are given.
  6. Keep re-usable grocery totes in your trunk.  Yep, your plastic bags will run out and you do not need more. Make it a habit of using your totes for all of your purchases.
  7. Make your own beauty products. It is easy to do a bit of research and learn how to make your own facial products, moisturizers, and body scrubs.
  8. Make your own cleaning products.  Again, this requires little time and effort to research ways to clean smart.  You will save money, your home will be chemical free and you will produce zero waste.

Nutrition Myths- Eggs: Healthy or not?

Eggs are probably one of the most demonized foods, mainly because of the misguided idea that eating egg yolk increases the cholesterol levels in your body.  Contrary to popular belief, eggs are one of the healthiest foods you can eat and they do not have a detrimental impact on cholesterol levels.  The research consistently and reliably shows that the cholesterol you eat has very little impact on how much cholesterol is in your blood (1).  In fact, eggs have many nutritional benefits and are an inexpensive high-quality protein.

Egg yolks are one of the most nutrient-dense, antioxidant-rich and vitamin-laden foods on the planet!  Compared to the yolks, the whites are basically protein and water. One egg contains 6 grams of high-quality protein and all 9 essential amino acids.  Lutein and zeaxanthin are the major antioxidants in eggs.  They protect the eyes by filtering harmful light wavelengths and lowering risk of macular degeneration. Eggs are also one of the few foods that contain naturally occurring vitamin D (24.5 grams).  One egg contains about 300 micrograms of choline, which is essential for cardiovascular and brain function.  Eating more of it may mean less inflammation, heart disease, diabetes, and Alzheimer’s.

Those people eating only egg whites — or avoiding eggs entirely — are missing out on many of these key nutrients!  There are many ways to prepare eggs and you can also add great variety by adding in nutritious vegetables and herbs, such as to an omelet, quiche, or frittata.  Enjoy your eggs!

When Calories Actually Count: How to Eat More, Not Less

When you think about calories, I am betting that you are under the impression that they all count.  Well, they do and they don’t.  A great way to gauge if a calorie counts or not is by tracking how many you consume.  If you are able to consume more than 2000 calories a day, your calories are most likely those that don’t count, don’t count towards your wellness that is.  It is easy to eat high calories if you are eating nutritionally deficient foods, it is difficult to eat an abundance of calories if the foods you eat are nutritionally ripe.  Calories that count are those that are nutritionally ripe and full of the macro, micro and phytonutrients, vitamins, minerals and fats that our bodies need.  They fill us up, give us sustained energy, and revitalize our hormones, our brain functioning, and our overall metabolism.  These foods include organic produce, vegetables, fruits, lean meats, fish, seafood, grass fed dairy products, free range eggs and natural organic grains.  These foods are naturally nourishing and produce a low glycemic response within the body that maximizes healthy blood sugar and decreases overall adiposity.  It is not about counting calories or restricting calories, it is about eating calories that count.  Look at 300 calories of soda.  All sugar, which raises our blood sugar causing our body to dump insulin which results in a “crash” (and makes us feel terrible!) 300 calories of vegetables will normalize blood sugar, increase satiety, reduce inflammation and give sustained energy.  Think about eating a bag of chips, you ingest processed potato, salt and trans fats, an easy 1000 calories that do nothing for your body.  Now consider eating a salad, full of greens, carrots, cucumbers, tomatoes, kale, onion, garlic, olives, avocado, salmon, and egg, you receive a cornucopia of nutrients and a dose of heart-healthy fats that our bodies need for all bodily functioning including cardiac regulation and hormonal stability. These foods also lend to healthy skin, nourished hair and nails, strong bones and happiness.  Your mood is directed by your food.  That is why processed foods are termed “Junk” foods and they leave you feeling bad.  They are useless, commercially driven and marketed food “stuffs” that increase adiposity, inflammation, depression, and disease.  The calories in such products do not count towards anything but disease, obesity, and overall poor health.

Here is the key to calories:  Eat all you want of the best most nutrient dense foods. This is intuitive, the best sources of nutrients are vegetables and fruit.  Do not eat processed foods, packages foods, refined sugars or drink any type of sweetened beverage (such as soda and fruit juices).  Find great food and think your drink!  Do not cut calories, but only eat those that count!

Healthy Words Make A Difference

We all have heard the phrase “You are what you eat”, but have you heard the phrase “You are what you think”?  The latter phrase might contribute to our overall health jut as much or more than the foods we eat. Many healthy persons subscribe to daily behaviors that include repeated mantras, memorized affirmations and posting daily positive words and phrases throughout their home and office.

Today, I would like to share with you a wonderful variety of positive affirmations that you can copy and post throughout your home and memorize, repeat and “mantra-ize” to better support your best health.

  1. “Physical Change Begins With Mental Change”  Unknown
  2. “Toughness is in the Soul and Spirit not in the Muscles”  Alex Karras
  3. “You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take” Wayne Gretzky
  4. “So many people spend their health gaining wealth and then spend their wealth trying to regain their health”  AJ Reb Materi
  5. “It is not about being the best, it is about being better than you were yesterday” Unknown
  6. “Eighty percent of success is just showing up!” Woody Allen
  7. “Mental Attitude is more important than mental capacity” Walter Dill Scott
  8. “If you hate starting over, stop quitting!” Unknown
  9. “Failure is the only opportunity to begin again, only this time more wisely” Henry Ford
  10. “The groundwork of all happiness is Health!’ Leigh Hunt

Take some time to look around the internet, books and other sources to find the most appropriate quotes and affirmations for your circumstances.  Whatever it is you are experiencing, challenged by or struggling with, there is definitely a positive phrase waiting to be claimed by you.  Words put into our mind are just as important to our health as the foods put into our stomach. Think healthy!

Cooking with Flax Seeds

The healthy Omega-3 oils found in flax seeds and milled flax are nutrient dense and contain the lignin phytonutrients that are both heat stable and very tasty. It is both safe to leave whole flax seeds at room temperature and to cook and bake with them.  The Omega-3 oils in flax seeds are heat resistant due to their particular cellular matrix.  Their matrix, or the combination of nutrients in the flax seed, protects the oils as they are not isolated.  When an Omega-3 oil is part of a combined matrix, this provides the protection chemical compounds need to withstand heat and baking.  Flax seeds can deliver amazing health benefits raw or cooked, baked or blended and taste wonderfully nutty.  Adding flax to any baked good, meatloaf, bread, pancake, stuffing or smoothie will add the lignin phytonutrients that supply the body with Omega-3 oils and that bulk up in the intestines and help purify the colon.  Replacing ingredients such as margarine, sugar and flours with flax is a healthful way to improve your diet.  There are many resources, cook books, conversion charts and substitution tables available in stores and on line that will help you to put this practice into place.  Now, if you are using flax seed oil, it is not a good idea to use it in heated dishes or in baked products.

Flax oil is not isolated in a matrix like the Omega-3’s found in whole and milled flax seeds.  Because flax oil does not contain the protective nutrients that flax seeds do, heating the flax oil will cause it to become rancid.  When an oil is heated and becomes rancid, this process produces carcinogens and is not good for your health.  Flax oil is an excellent vegetarian alternative to fish oil for a daily dose of Omega-3 fatty acids.  Flax oil can be drizzled over fruit, blended with yogurt and used over greens.  Like the whole flax seed and milled flax, flax oil has a lovely warm nutty aroma and lends to both savory and sweet dishes.  To preserve the flavor of both whole flax seeds, milled flax and flax oil, many chose to keep their flax products in the refrigerator.  Although whole flax seeds and milled flax are indeed heat stable, keeping them in the freezer has been proven to increase shelf life and to maintain the greatest flavor and desired nutty taste.  Humidity, warmth, direct sunlight and other weather related variables can decrease the taste and consistency of milled flax.  Roasting flax seeds in a pan over low heat and grinding with a bit of salt and herbs makes for an excellent flax powder that can be added to any meal as a health boosting condiment.  Whole flax seeds are not easily absorbed by the body and are best milled or pulsed in a coffee grinder.  Using a coffee grinder to process whole flax seeds is an easy way to grind them into a delicate and tasty powder as needed.

For further information on all things flax, please look into the various on-line sites that offer recipes and healthy vegetarian recipes.  Look for alternative food cook books and vegetarian baking recipe books in your local bookstore.
