Chia Cacao Spirulina Pudding

Chia pudding makes a delicious, filling, and nutritious breakfast or snack. Chia seeds are considered to be a nutritional powerhouse. The tiny seeds contain Omega 3 fatty acids, fiber, protein, antioxidants, and minerals such as potassium, magnesium, calcium, and iron. Chia seeds absorb liquids to create a fun tapioca pudding-like texture. Although there are many variations you could do with a chia pudding recipe, this one with spirulina and cacao is my personal favorite. Spirulina and cacao are also superfoods in their own right- spirulina boasts an arsenal of vitamins and minerals, while cacao overflows with antioxidants. This bounty of nutrients will have your cells singing with joy! Enjoy.

Chia Cacao Spirulina Pudding

  • 2  ½ cups almond milk
  • ½ cup chia seeds
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon spirulina powder
  • 1 teaspoon cacao powder
  • 2 tablespoons maple syrup

In a 1-quart jar, stir together the chia seeds, cacao, and spirulina powder. Add the almond milk, vanilla, and maple syrup. Stir liquid and seeds together. Close the jar and shake to combine. Refrigerate until very thick and pudding-like, at least 4 hours or overnight, shaking or stirring occasionally. May be served in a bowl or enjoyed from a glass.

Tasty Turmeric Tea

Turmeric is an amazing ingredient to have in your spice cabinet and in your medicine cabinet.  It can help soothe joint and arthritis pain as it is a powerful anti-inflammatory.  Turmeric may also help with headaches, depression, upset stomach and lung infections.  Turmeric is fat soluble, so you’ll absorb more of its nutrient properties if you have it with a little bit of good fat, like this tea made with coconut milk.  This tasty turmeric tea will perk you up in the morning, calm you down at night and soothe a sore throat.

Drink up and cheers to your good health!

Finding Bliss in your Back Yard…or Balcony…or Park

I want to let you in on a secret: Finding peace and chilling out is something you can do, it is free, it can happen anywhere and you do not need anything at all, but yourself, to get it.

I have another secret for you, I struggle with relaxation, letting go and making time to meditate, but I do know that making time to do so can increase my health.

I promise you this, what I am sharing today has the power to soothe, re-align and awaken both your mind and body and will help you achieve the mind-set you wish to maintain. One that is calm, cool, happy, aware, settled and assured.

I believe in you, I believe in the power of “chilling out” and I encourage you to find your bliss and to be welcomed “Om” with the use of the following tips.

–        Finding peace and chilling out is easy and fun, there are no rights or wrongs in doing so. Just stay true to you.  Staying true to you is easy!  For example, if you like to walk barefoot in the park and others wear shoes, go barefoot.  If you like to sing out loud and hum while you work, do so!  No matter what others say or how others approach things, stay true to what is best for you.

–        Think about where you would be most comfortable “chilling out” and what suits you and your lifestyle best.  Going back to the first point, stay true to you, and decide where you like to be and what is convenient for you.  Your yard, deck, porch or bedroom? Perhaps the park, a quiet room at the library or a hill side.  Just because others like to meditate in the park or in a yoga studio does not mean you have to.  Write down what suits you.

–        Ok, now that you have decided what fits your style, let’s think about timing and comfort.  Timing means when you could practice relaxation every day and what you can do to ensure you will be comfortable.  How about an hour before bed, on your back porch and most comfortably in your PJ’s. Write down what is very best for you.

Here is another secret: You have written everything down that you need to start getting your bliss on!  You know now that finding your bliss through a daily relaxation practice is simple.  Easy. All about You. Suited to you. Fitting your style. Exuding your true self.

–        There is no right or wrong way to start, to sit or to “do”. Just listen to your inner self and let your body and mind go. Take your time, but do not pressure yourself.  You might relax this way for three minutes or for thirty minutes.  You are in charge here.  This is all for you!

Allowing your body and mind simple luxuries, such as a quick trip to bliss in your backyard, can do wonders for your overall health.  Please treat yourself kindly and take the time daily to welcome your body and mind “Om”.  Adding in healthy food, lots of clean water, exercise and vitamins and minerals will help too!

As always, I believe in you!  You can make healthy changes and follow through! Now go get your “Om” on!

Sending Yourself Outside To Play: How To Flip Exercise into Serious Fun

Remember when we were kids and our parents would send us outside to play?  We would find our balls, jump ropes, hula hoops, buckets, shovels, and blocks and we would run around playing tag and hide n’ go seek. We were bounding here and there, jumping on the jungle gym, riding our bikes and even at night, we would scurry around catching fireflies. Our hearts and souls were content, our skin radiant and our body’s full of joy. We had been moving for hours. Laughing, singing, chasing and, without even knowing, providing ourselves with wonderful aerobic exercise.

Grab a tight hold of those memories and work your hardest to forget what you have learned now. Forget that you have learned that adults do not play. Forget that going to the gym is the only way to get a workout in. Forget that a computer screen needs your attention and forget about your darn phone.

Remember that being outdoors and moving your body awakens you, lightens your spirit and provides beauty and scenery that inspires. Remember that you do know how to walk, run, skip, jump rope, hula hoop, climb, bike and scurry. Remember that if you open a door, you are there! You do not need to drive or prepare to get “outside”, just open your door and voila, you are in it!

Moving your body outdoors is serious fun and an easy way to get exercise in without even thinking about it.  Look down a path in the park and try to run to the first tree, skip to the fifth tree and hop to the eighth tree.  Make an obstacle course that no one but you can see.  Jump over every rock or branch and do a standing push-up against every mighty oak. Jog for thirty seconds, run for ten seconds and skip for thirty more seconds.  Repeat until you are smiling, rosy-cheeked and winded!  Be creative, step outside of this technology controlled box we have been programmed to live in and relive what you best remember: Playing outdoors!

Now, this is how to flip exercise and make if fun again!

…..As always, I believe in you and I wish you the very best health possible.  Please always make time for you, listen to your body and please strive to eat healthily, drink ample water and take your vitamins!

Beyond Boredom and Daily Dread: Fitness That Actually Feels Right!

If you are like me, there is nothing more dreadful than a fitness activity that feels wrong.  Whether it be a spinning class, Zumba, running or lifting weights, what feels wrong to an individual should not have to be done. What feels right, whether that be walking, climbing mountains, swimming or hot yoga, should be embraced and definitely replace the activities that are not enjoyable. What this boils down to is being true to yourself and owning the fact that what is best for you may not be the most popular and that is just fine!

Feeling good about getting fit is key to the process.  If you are trying out different activities and you find some boring and others unsuited to your needs, drop them.  There is no sense in doing something intended to help you when it actually causes you dread, boredom or stress.  However, sometimes an activity, especially those that are new to us, might require a few try’s before a decision to whether or not it is a good choice can be made.  Zumba, for instance, is a bucket of fun, but the first few classes can be intimidating and overwhelming.  Once you realize that you are not alone in learning new moves and that no one cares if you mess up, you might end up really liking Zumba.  Or not, and that is A-OK!

Fitness is essential to a healthy life and, like all things, should suit who you are and not only change your body for the better, but also change your mind for the better.  Again, if you find that every time you go to the gym you feel anxiety and every time you take a spinning class your back aches and you cannot wait to be done, change your routine to something that brings you joy! Fitness should always feel right! You are worth taking the time to find out what works best for you and I just know, once you do, your fitness will not only be right but also invigorating, stimulating and a true joy!

I wish you the best health and I hope you will take the time to nurture yourself today with healthy food, plenty of water and your favorite activities.

Please remember to take your vitamins and take your time! Enjoy your journey! Always!

Missing the Nutritional Mark: A Commentary on Media Sway

Recent studies released to the public have reported that nutritional supplements do not prevent heart disease and cancer(s) and that they promote disease in certain instances.  These recent studies do not take an extensive look at the longitudinal findings from past to present nor do they take into consideration proven correlations between supplemental nutrition and the prevention of disease(s). Starting in 2008 Vitamin E was positively correlated to the reduced risk of lung cancer and to the decreased formation of prostate tumors.  In 2011 Vitamin C was positively correlated with a reduced incidence of death by heart failure and Vitamin D was positively linked to a reduced incidence of colorectal and breast cancer(s).  Furthermore, in 2012 a JAMA reported an eight percent reduction in cancer risk if a multivitamin protocol is adopted.

Media enjoys swaying the public and convincing large majorities to either buy or believe something.  What media might want the public to buy or believe may not be healthy, but usually increases the wealth of businesses. When you are gleaning through recent studies, advice, news bites and advertisements, raise a critical eyebrow and read between the lines.  Look at funding sources, study designs and the author’s credentials and remember, media is savvy, not necessarily smart.  What the media advises is not always what is best and more often than not, what media suggests might decrease your health.  Be careful, watch what you read, and listen to your body not businesses.

3 Easy Ways to Make Sure Your Produce is Free of Pesticides

If you are like me, you have committed to eating more produce in the New Year. We know this is the best thing we can do for our bodies for optimal health, boosted immunity and complete “feel good” status.  But there is a caveat to doing so:  pesticides and chemicals.  Traditionally grown produce is laden with harmful products that can deteriorate the state of our health.  If you are buying traditionally grown produce and you want to reap all of the benefits without allowing any of the harmful pesticides and chemicals to become ingested, please follow these super simple yet effective tips:

  1. Soak.  Soak your produce in a bath of water and apple cider vinegar.  You can do this in your kitchen sink or in a large bowl.  Let your produce soak for an hour or so.
  2. Wash and rinse.  Strain your produce from the apple cider vinegar bath and then wash and rinse with cool water.  If you want to, you can wash with an all- natural soap as well.  If you do so, make sure you rinse thoroughly.
  3. Prep and store.  As soon as you wash and rinse, dry your produce, prep your produce and store it.  This way you will have clean and ready to go produce which means you will be more likely to eat it.

Please be smart about pesticides and chemicals.  These bad boys can devastate your health and interfere with your hormones and metabolic pathways.  Pesticides and chemicals decrease the uptake of vitamins and minerals in your body, so get busy cleaning up the produce you eat! When in doubt know your source. Local and organic are always the best ways to go, try farmers markets or grow in your backyard and on your patio.

The 5 Vitamins of Yoga

Just like the importance vitamins have on our daily nutritional practices and health, vitamins are also essential to the practice of yoga. Yoga has 5 “vitamins” that nourish the soul.  They include Sraddha, Virya, Smrti, Samadhi and Prajna. Sraddha, which means faith, teaches the student of yoga to build trust and confidence which lend to the ability to practice true faith.  This vitamin helps the yogi to approach life with a firm conviction, positive attitude and acceptance.  This vitamin allows for the sweet hope necessary for a practice steeped in true faith. Virya is most commonly referred to as the vitamin of spiritual energy and soul vitality.  This vitamin erupts from the positive feelings associated with doing the right thing and staying on your true path.  Sometimes characterized as the soul vitamin of courage, this dose will give you the strong will needed to practice intentness and face life with the stamina and dedication required to fight the good fight. Smirti is the third Yoga vitamin that represents mindfulness and intentness.  Minding your body, mind and soul are palpable aspects of the life experience that are nourished by vitamin smrti.  Memory is associated with smirti as it includes the recollection of what the yogi has studied and continues to study.  Meditating on what the yogi learned and is learning increases the mindfulness and focus essential to an expanded consciousness.  This yoga vitamin is said to be essential to the practice of meditation and the prelude to transferring energy from the sympathetic nervous system to the parasympathetic nervous system.  This transfer of energy relaxes the body and reduces harmful hormone production such as cortisol.  The seasoned yogi learns that with the presence of Smrti, intentness, the mind becomes free of all disturbances and harmony occurs.  True harmony comes through the absorption of the yoga vitamin Smrti. The yoga vitamin Samadhi represents the togetherness of life and our perception of life and things as they truly are.  This soul vitamin allows the yogi to actually see reality with a clear and nonjudgmental mind free of disturbances and harmonized.  Samadhi is taught in classical yoga and is a highly technical concept the yogi takes time to learn. Ending with Prajna, the fifth soul vitamin taught to and learned by the yogi is the end goal of a yoga practice.  This is the realization of true perception.  This perception is the key to true knowledge. Not worldly knowledge, knowledge of the soul and of positive energy that expands and increases the mind and its capacity to unite the self with self. This knowledge truly unites the loose ends of one’s inner being with the true self.
